Rings

to symbolize everlasting love, a ring is worn on the third finger of the left hand because the vein in this finger is believed to run straight to the heart.

White

Victorians invented white weddings. Previously brides wore their best dress. White is meant to symbolize purity.

Bouquets were originally made of herbs and were designed to prevent evil spirits.

Veils

Thought to keep away evil spirits.

Chimney Sweeps

Considered good luck to kiss one on the way to the ceremony as they are associated with hearth and home. Something old, something new – represents the journey from the brides old life to a new life Something borrowed – to denote sharing within the marriage

Something blue

Blue is associated with continuity. Silver Sixpence – Usually worn in the brides shoe, to encourage prosperity within the marriage.

Confetti

This was originally nuts during the Roman times, which was done to denote a fruitful marriage

The Cake

Traditionally a fruit cake to bring fruitfulness to the marriage. A slice is usually kept, as it is supposed that this guarantees a faithful husband.

Honeymoon

A symbol of life and fertility which came from the drink of honeyed mead. The Bride and Groom would drink this until the Moon had passed.

Receptions

Originating from medieval times, when the groom had to demonstrate that he could support his wife. He would give gifts of food and drink to his in-laws.
